Overview

What Is ZstatFlu and How Does It Work?
  • ZstatFlu™ is a diagnostic test that quickly and reliably detects influenza A and B.
  • The test uses a labeled influenza neuraminidase substrate.
  • Upon reaction with the influenza virus, the substrate yields a blue-colored product.
  • If it's blue… it's flu!

ZstatFlu: A Tool and a New Paradigm for Today
  • Influenza is easy to misdiagnose on clinical signs and symptoms alone.
  • ZstatFlu can quickly determine whether influenza is present.
  • You can now diagnose influenza first - not last.
  • A definitive diagnosis of influenza results in:
    • Improved patient care.
    • Reduced need for other lab tests.
    • A reduction in the inappropriate prescription of antibiotics.
    • Reduced healthcare costs.
    • Increased patient satisfaction.

What Is ZstatFlu and How Does It Work?

ZstatFlu™ is the first available point-of-care diagnostic test that can reliably and quickly diagnose all strains of influenza A and B. The test uses a unique substrate for influenza neuraminidase, an enzyme that assists viral replication by promoting the release of the virus from infected cells. The ZstatFlu substrate is labeled with a chromagen. When influenza virus is present, the viral neuraminidase enzyme cleaves the ZstatFlu substrate, which liberates the chromagen and yields a distinct blue color. If it's blue… it's flu!

ZstatFlu is not an antibody-based test. This eliminates the worries about "strain sensitivity." ZstatFlu has been tested against all previous types and strains of influenza, and reliably detects every one of them. In addition, the USDA has tested ZstatFlu against the avian (H5N1) strain of influenza. This new influenza strain caused worldwide concern in 1997 because it had never previously been seen in humans. As expected, ZstatFlu was found to detect this new strain. With ZstatFlu, you can be confident that future flu types will be detected.

ZstatFlu is the tool you need to definitively diagnose influenza A and B - today. Unlike viral culture, which can take several days for results, the ZstatFlu test can be performed in approximately 20 minutes. The test is FDA approved and CLIA certified for moderately complex testing facilities. After collection of the throat swab specimen, it can be transported to the lab for testing without special handling requirements. Once the sample is in the lab, the test takes only ~20 minutes to run, with little hands-on time.

ZstatFlu - A Tool and a New Paradigm for Today

Currently, most physicians think of influenza as a diagnosis of exclusion. Now you can begin to think of a diagnosis of influenza as one of inclusion. Make a diagnosis of flu first - not last.

Influenza is the most common respiratory illness you see from January through March. It's the horse not the zebra! With ZstatFlu, you can rapidly diagnose influenza, without having to rule out other illnesses first.

The most common reason for a high-spiking fever in January through March is influenza! The current work-up for a child with a high fever and a seizure could include a spinal tap and a CBC. Now you can diagnose influenza first with the ZstatFlu test and, if it is positive, no further invasive testing is necessary.

Patients with a chronic disease (e.g., cardiovascular disease, chronic lung disease, diabetes, immunosupression) presenting with fever and at risk for infection can now be immediately tested for influenza. An early and definitive influenza diagnosis eliminates the necessity for more invasive testing and allows you to treat promptly and prevent complications.

If your office or telephone triage nurse suspects flu because of the symptoms, a ZstatFlu test can be done when the patient first enters the office. Because the test takes only ~20 minutes, the patient can wait for results. You then have a definitive diagnosis on which to base treatment.

You now have a tool to change your clinical practice pattern during flu season. Getting a definitive influenza diagnosis first (not last) increases the quality of your care and promotes patient satisfaction - all at less cost.
