ViraZyme® Technology Platform The technology approach we call ViraZyme® leads to the simultaneous and parallel development of diagnostic and therapeutic products. While most companies utilize one specific technology to develop a diagnostic and a totally different one to develop therapeutics, ZymeTx's research, focuses on key targets of viruses that are encoded by the infectious organism. These targets are essential enzymes that viruses use for replication, maturation or infectivity; more specifically the target is the enzyme active-site or "groove" within this protein. Because this active-site "groove" is small and protected itself from attack by huge protecting antibodies, the parts of this active-site "groove" have been conserved for many years, while it has mutated the outer surface and other parts of this enzyme to evade antibody attack. Small molecules, however, will fit into the viral enzyme's active-site "groove". The small molecules that enter and these "grooves" are called "substrates" while small molecules that "plug-up" these "grooves" are called "inhibitors". It is the identification and development of these small molecules as substrates and inhibitors that constitutes the ViraZyme® technology. These small molecules can be likened to a specific key that fits into a virus' enzyme active-site "groove". The small molecules need to be specific as a key to fit into the "groove". ZymeTx has identified and developed small molecules that fit only into the active-site "groove" of influenza type A and B neuraminidase. The research and development towards both the diagnostic and therapeutic product proceeds simultaneously because it is the active-site "groove" that is the target of both research programs. As each product develops further along, the final stages of development diverge to accommodate the end use of these small molecules. ViraZyme Technology ViraZyme is a rational design technology based on targeting active sites on viral enzymes using X-ray crystallography and molecular modeling. Compounds are designed to interact with specific viral enzyme targets. |
